Rhythm Game

$

This game came be played with an entire class to practice rhythm patterns – and you can use whatever rhythm patterns you want. I include sixteenth note patterns below.

Directions: Divide the class into two groups. Group 1 rolls the dice to determine how many steps to take. If they land on a whole rest, they miss their turn; if they land on a star, they must all say the rhythm pattern that goes with that star. If all students say the pattern correctly (I allow for one person to make a mistake, but not more than one.), the group gets a point. Either way, the next team gets a turn. (If the other team makes any noise when it is not their turn, they lose a point.)

The entire board looks like this. Larger printable versions are below.

Rhythm Compositions

The first page would work well for Kindergarten and 1st grade students to enter notes and rests that equal one beat. The sheet does not have instructions on it so it can be used for different rhythms. For instance, you could assign any of the following rhythms:

Another option is to cut out the cards (and laminate them) and have the students rearrange them on their page.

This works well for assigning rhythms that aren’t limited to only one beat, such as half notes, dotted half notes, dotted quarter notes and whole notes. You will notice a subtle color difference in the lines below where they will write their notes. Each shade of color equals one beat.

Both “Compose Rhythms” pages are half-sheets.

This page allows students to copy some examples of measures or write their own.

All composition sheets have long lines for the Name in case you want students to work with partners. The partners’ names can both fit in the lines. (I like each student to have his/her own sheet, and each partner’s name can be written in parentheses after the student’s name.)

Bubblegum in a Dish

Lyrics

Bubblegum bubblegum in a dish
How many pieces do you wish?
[Student answers] Five!
[Count that number] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Variations

  • Only have students put one fist in the circle. The person with the last fist to be chosen (i.e. If the number five is named, it would be the fifth fist) is “out” to go play a drum on the steady beat.
  • Use this poem in a preschool class for a “Nutrition” theme:
    • “Vegetables, vegetables in a dish, How many carrots (peas, brussel sprouts, etc.) do you wish?”

Game

Each student puts out 2 fists. The one who’s counting (“It”) goes around tapping each fist with their own fist while reciting the rhyme. The student who is tapped on the word “wish” says a number. “It” taps that many more fists. The fist that’s landed on last is “out,” and the student puts that fist behind his/her back. Keep playing until only one fist is left. That person becomes the next “It.” (The game goes faster if each student puts in only one fist.)

Si me dan pasteles

Lyrics

Si me dan pasteles, dénmelos calientes,
Que pasteles fríos empachan la gente.

Si me dan arroz no me den cuchara,
Que mamá me dijo que se lo llevara.

Esta casa tiene las puertas de acero
Y el que vive en ella es un caballero.

Dios guarda esta casa y guarda la familia
Y que los Santos Reyes también las bendigan.

Translation

If you give me pastries*, give them to me hot,
Because cold pastries give people a stomachache.

If you give me rice, don’t give me a spoon.
My mama told me to bring some to her

This house has gates of steel.
Whoever lives here must be a gentleman.

God watches over this house and watches over the family.
May the Three Kings also bless them.

*pastries = Puerto Rican holiday dish, usually meat & sweet peppers wrapped in banana leaf.

Columbia the Gem of the Ocean

Columbia is the poetic name for the national personification of the United States, which originated during the 18th century. (source)

Lyrics

O Columbia, the gem of the ocean,
The home of the brave and the free,
The shrine of each patriot’s devotion,
A world offers homage to thee;
Thy mandates make heroes assemble,
When Liberty’s form stands in view;
Thy banners make tyranny tremble,
When borne by the red, white, and blue.
When borne by the red, white, and blue,
When borne by the red, white, and blue,
Thy banners make tyranny tremble,
When borne by the red, white and blue.

Vacation Days are Here

Lyrics

Ho ho, vacation days are here,
Tra la, tra la, tra la!
We welcome them with right good cheer,
Tra la, tra la, tra la!
In wisdom’s halls we love to be,
But yet ’tis pleasant to be free.
Ho ho, vacation days are here,
Tra la, tra la, tra la!

Ho ho, the hill, the wood, the dale,
Tra la, tra la, tra la!
The lake on which we used to sail,
Tra la, tra la, tra la!
We greet thee all with right good cheer,
In thought unchanged again we’re here.
Ho ho, the hill, the wood, the dale,
Tra la, tra la, tra la!

Ho ho, the hours will quickly fly,
Tra la, tra la, tra la!
And soon vacation time be by,
Tra la, tra la, tra la!
Ah then, we’ll all, in glad refrain,
Sing welcome to our school again,
Ho ho, the hours will quickly fly,
Tra la, tra la, tra la!

Happy Birthday to You

John B. Sails

Lyrics

Come on the sloop John B.,
My grandfather and me,
Round Nassau town we did roam.
Drinking all night, we got in a fight,
I feel so break-up, I want to go home.

Refrain
So hoist up the John B. sails,
See how the mainsail set,
Send for the captain ashore—let me go home,
Let me go home, let me go home,
I feel so break-up, I want to go home.

The poor cook got the fits,
Throw away all of my grits.
Then he took and he ate up all of my corn
Let me go home, I want to go home,
I feel so break up, I want to go home. Refrain

Send all the things from ashore,
Let all the breezes blow,
I’m so sorry that I can no longer stay,
Goodbye to you, Tra-la-la-lu,
This is the worst trip since I was born. Refrain

Mrs. Macaroni

Lyrics

Here comes Mrs. (Mr.) Macaroni
Riding on her (his) snow white pony
Here she comes in all her glory
Mrs. Macaroni

Rum tum rum tum, Susianna,
Rum tum rum tum, Susianna,
Rum tum rum tum, Susianna,
Mrs. Macaroni

Another Version

Here comes Mrs. (Mr.) Macaroni
Riding on her (his) snow white pony
In the land of glory, glory
This is… Adam’s [insert student’s name] special day.

A, A, A for Adam [Substitute first letter of student’s name] A, A, A for Adam
A, A, A for Adam
This is Adam’s [insert student’s name] special day.

Game – Version 1

Students hold hands and circle right with one student in the middle walking in the opposite direction. When students finish singing “Mrs. Macaroni” at the end of measure 8, everyone stops moving, and the person in the middle chooses the person closest to him/her. They hold hands – with arms crossed – and circle around while the other students combine the two names and sing them together, such as “Susie” and “Anna” becomes “Susieanna.” The student just chosen becomes the new student in the middle.

Game – Version 2

Students hold hands and circle right with one student in the middle walking in the opposite direction. On the words “This is…” students stand still and do a pretend drum roll on their legs with alternating hands. The person in the middle chooses a partner. Students sing that new person’s name in the song. The two people in the center do a right arm swing and sing the first letter of the new student’s name. The student just chosen becomes the new student in the middle.

Lyrics

Ten green bottles hanging on the wall
Ten green bottles hanging on the wall
And if one green bottle should accidentally fall,
There’ll be nine green bottles hanging on the wall.

Nine green bottles…

Continue counting down until the last verse:

One green bottle…
And if that green bottle should accidentally fall,
There’ll be no more bottles hanging on the wall.
