Day-O (Banana Boat Song)

$

This is a work song, thought to be sung by Jamaican banana workers, working the night shift loading bananas onto ships. In the morning, they want their work to be counted up so that they can go home. There were numerous versions of lyrics, some likely improvised on the spot by the singers as a call and response. The song was probably created around the second half of the nineteenth century or the first half of twentieth century, where there was a rise of the banana trade in Jamaica. (source)

Lyrics

Day-O, Day-O, Daylight come and I wanna go home
Day-O, Day-O, Daylight come and I wanna go home

Come, Mister Tally Man, tally me banana
Daylight come and I wanna go home
Come, Mister Tally Man, tally me banana
Daylight come and I wanna go home

Six han’, seven han’, eight han’ bunch,
Daylight come and I wanna go home
Six han’, seven han’, eight han’ bunch,
Daylight come and I wanna go home

Albuquerque Turkey

Lyrics

Albuquerque is a turkey,
And he’s feathered and he’s fine
And he wobbles and he gobbles
And he’s absolutely mine.

He’s the best pet that you can get,
Better than a dog or cat,
He’s my Albuquerque turkey,
And I’m awfully proud of that.

And my Albuquerque turkey
Is so happy in his bed,
‘Cause for our Thanksgiving dinner,
We had scrambled eggs instead.

Sleigh Ride

Lyrics

Ting-a-ling-a-ling go the sleigh bells sweet
Ting-a-ling-a-ling in the snowy street
Here comes a sleigh to take us riding,
Merrily along on its runners gliding
Stops for a moment in the snow
Tumble-umble in and then away we go!

Ting-a-ling-a-ling as we glide along
Ting-a-ling-a-ling is the sleigh bells’ song
See how the horses pull together
Galloping along in the frosty weather
Trot I go the hoofs with cheery sound
Clatter, clatter, clatter o’er the frozen ground

Ting-a-ling-a-ling by the frozen lake
Ting-a-ling-a-ling, what a noise we make.
All afternoon our bells are tinkling,
With a merry tune till the stars are twinkling;
Back to the city turn we fast,
Ting-a-ling-a-ling and now we’re home at last!

And if that green bottle should accidentally fall,
There’ll be no more bottles hanging on the wall.
